Workflow is a unique module included as part of the project management solution. Processes like sales leads tracking, issue tracking and help desk are not suitable to be tracked using the traditional project management methodology. In a business process, the same unit of work moves across different "steps" or "states" or "stages" (and potentially different people) until it is completed, while in a project there are multiple activities worked on by one or more persons. Let's take the example of a help desk request. Your customer makes a request. Your support either responds to it. To start with, the request is "Unresolved". Your support representative responds to it and marks it "Responded". If satisfied, the customer may either "Close" the request or reply back to your request moving it back to "Unresolved". You may even want that the request is auto-closed if the customer does not respond in a stipulated time. Similarly, In a document approval process, the document will initially be "Unapproved" and later "Approved" once revised to satisfaction. The workflow module includes the ability to notify one or more individuals on delays and even perform automatic "state changes" after a stipulated time.
